Halloween arrives tomorrow.  Are you excited or scared?  Are you prepared for the legions of masked kiddies who will assail your doorstep seeking whatever goodies you are handing out?  Do your plans include attending a Halloween Soirée or perhaps you’re hosting a Halloween party.  Whatever your plans may be here are some wines that capture the Halloween spirit.

Wine to Die For

From Sonoma County, Armida Winery delivers Poizin.  A reserve Zinfandel, this is definitely a “wine to die for”.  Each year they hand select barrels from their best lots of Zinfandel to make up the Poizin blend.  The 2007 blend is comprised of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.  It shows as jammy, fruit forward flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum and cassis jump out of the glass and attack your senses.  The fruit is however nicely complemented by vanilla and spice on the finish.  Poizin can either satisfy your adult candy cravings or soothe your bitter feelings of loneliness and isolation on Halloween night.

Blood of the Vine

Vampire Vineyards offers a full line of wines to fit any Halloween desire.  Rumor has it that the Vampire Vineyards are actually owned by a circle of vampires, and the company’s founder, an entertainment attorney from New York, is actually just a front. (Whether he and his convertible were commandeered by a Vampire is still a subject for debate.) We do know however that after satiating themselves for years with their Transylvanian blood of the vine, the powers that be decided to spice things up and migrate westward like so many vampires before them.

Using meticulous advance planning, these vampires planted their rootstock at the dawn of the 21st century in the mountainous region of Paso Robles, California, where the ocean fog frequently rolls in off the coast providing the perfect cover to their hidden vineyards.

Having waited a full seven years, the vampires’ rootstock now has yielded wonderful tight small clusters of grapes that have been skillfully blended by vampire winemakers to produce phenomenal wines — smooth and well rounded, with forward fresh fruit – that have been aged in both French and American Oak Barrels. Sip the Blood of the Vine and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy these wonderfully devilish wines during this year’s All Hallows Eve.
